First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jul 01, 2026 · Updated 4 times

Summary

This study tests whether spermidine, a natural substance found in foods like soy and aged cheese, can improve heart and muscle health in elderly people with coronary artery disease. 180 participants aged 65 and older will receive either spermidine capsules or a placebo for a period. Researchers will measure changes in heart mass, muscle mass, inflammation, and exercise capacity.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Spermidine (a dietary supplement)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a simple supplement to help elderly heart patients maintain heart and muscle function.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase trial (180 people) testing a supplement, not a drug. Results may not lead to a proven treatment, and benefits may be modest or absent.
