New hope for fatty liver: Stomach-Shrinking procedure may beat diet alone

NCT ID NCT06138821

First seen Jan 04, 2026 · Last updated Apr 30, 2026 · Updated 16 times

Summary

This study tests whether a minimally invasive procedure called endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG), which reduces stomach size by about 70%, combined with lifestyle changes, can reverse fatty liver disease (MASH) better than lifestyle changes alone. About 132 adults with obesity and MASH will be randomly assigned to either ESG plus lifestyle changes or lifestyle changes only. The main goal is to see if MASH resolves without worsening liver scarring after one year.
