Cardiac arrest survivors' brain function tracked for two years

NCT ID NCT03543371

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looks at how cardiac arrest affects thinking, memory, emotions, and sleep over time. About 200 survivors will take detailed brain tests 7 and 24 months after their cardiac arrest. Their results will be compared to heart attack patients who did not have a cardiac arrest, to understand what problems are unique to cardiac arrest.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If this study succeeds, it could help doctors better predict and support cognitive recovery after cardiac arrest.

What could go wrong

This is an observational sub-study, not a treatment trial. It cannot prove what causes cognitive changes, and results may not apply to all cardiac arrest survivors.
