Can a Plant-Based diet calm the immune system after a heart attack?

NCT ID NCT06209723

First seen Aug 14, 2026 ยท Last updated Aug 14, 2026

Summary

This trial investigates whether a five-week vegetarian diet can dampen the inflammatory response of the immune system in people who recently had a heart attack, as well as in healthy volunteers. Participants will follow a vegetarian diet for five weeks, then return to their usual eating habits for six weeks, and then switch to the other diet for another five weeks. Blood samples are taken at several points to measure markers of inflammation, offering a glimpse into how food might influence immune health.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ€” not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
A vegetarian diet followed for five weeks
What this could lead to
If a vegetarian diet reduces inflammation, it could become a simple lifestyle recommendation to support recovery after a heart attack.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial, and the diet's effect on immunity may be modest or vary between individuals. Adherence to the diet is also a challenge.
