Quick blood test could spot ICU patients at highest risk of death

NCT ID NCT07184593

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This observational study tests a new bedside device that measures nucleosome levels in the blood of critically ill ICU patients. Researchers want to see if these levels can predict which patients are likely to die within 30 days. The study will enroll 130 adults with conditions like sepsis, shock, severe trauma, or brain injury. It does not test any treatment, only a diagnostic tool.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could give doctors a fast, bedside tool to predict which ICU patients are at highest risk of dying within 30 days, helping guide care decisions.

What could go wrong

This is an early observational study with only 130 participants. The test may not prove accurate enough for routine use, and results may not apply to all ICU patients.
