Digital nudge gets seniors out of bed: study tests simple screen to boost activity
NCT ID NCT06336252
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study tested whether showing older hospitalized patients their own activity levels on a bedside screen could encourage them to move more. 130 adults aged 60+ with conditions like COPD, heart failure, or Parkinson's wore a small sensor and saw real-time feedback on time spent lying, sitting, standing, or walking. The goal was to see if this simple nudge increases time out of bed during the hospital stay and for three months after discharge.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
digital nudging intervention (activity sensor and bedside monitor with visual feedback)
What this could lead to
If successful, this approach could offer a simple, low-cost way to encourage more movement in older hospitalized patients, potentially improving recovery and reducing readmissions.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed study with 130 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The intervention is behavioral, so individual motivation and adherence can vary widely.
