Ambulance EEG could cut stroke treatment delays by an hour
NCT ID NCT06871969
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests a portable EEG device called StrokePointer that ambulance crews can use to detect severe strokes caused by large vessel blockages. Currently, over half of these patients are taken to hospitals that cannot perform the needed clot-removal procedure, causing an average one-hour delay. The device aims to help paramedics identify these patients and take them directly to a specialized stroke center. The trial will enroll 275 adults with suspected stroke and measure how often the device produces usable brain-wave data and how accurately it detects large vessel occlusions.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
StrokePointer portable EEG device
What this could lead to
If successful, this device could help paramedics quickly identify patients with severe strokes and take them directly to the right hospital, saving critical time.
What could go wrong
This is an early validation study with 275 participants. Previous EEG devices had poor signal quality in 32% of patients, and this device may face similar issues in real-world ambulance settings.
