Could a Weight-Loss pill also crush kidney stones?

NCT ID NCT04621929

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This pilot study tested whether a combination of phentermine and topiramate, two drugs used for weight loss, could help shrink uric acid kidney stones in obese people with type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes. Nineteen participants were randomly assigned to receive the drug combo or continue their usual care (citrate, allopurinol, diet). The main goal was to see if stone size changed over 18 months, along with weight, urine pH, and blood sugar levels.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Phentermine and topiramate (weight-loss drug combination)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a way to treat both obesity and uric acid kidney stones with one medication, reducing the need for separate treatments.

What could go wrong

This was a very small pilot study with only 19 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The drug combination can cause side effects like dizziness, tingling, and birth defects.
