Can shedding pounds reboot the Heart's exercise engine?
NCT ID NCT06576050
First seen Aug 13, 2026 · Last updated Aug 14, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looks at how weight loss surgery (gastric sleeve) affects exercise ability in people with or at risk for heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). Researchers will measure oxygen use during exercise before and 12 months after surgery. The goal is to understand the link between obesity, exercise intolerance, and HFpEF, and whether weight loss can improve heart function.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Gastric sleeve surgery (weight loss surgery)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could clarify whether weight loss surgery can improve exercise tolerance and potentially reverse some signs of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early study (21 participants) that only observes changes, not a controlled trial. Results may not apply to all patients, and surgery carries inherent risks.
