Turning while thinking: new training may cut fall risk in diabetic patients

NCT ID NCT07394504

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tested whether combining balance exercises with mental tasks (like naming animals) can improve balance and mild memory problems in people with diabetic nerve damage. Fifty adults aged 50 and older with type 2 diabetes and mild cognitive issues took part in 24 sessions over 8 weeks. The goal was to see if this dual-task training works better than standard balance exercises alone.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Turning based dual task training (a procedure involving balance exercises combined with cognitive tasks)

What this could lead to

If it works, this training could help people with diabetic nerve damage improve their balance and thinking skills, reducing falls and boosting independence.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed trial with only 50 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The training requires multiple sessions and may not work for those with severe complications.
