Could donor stem cells repair hearts damaged by chemo?
NCT ID NCT02962661
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This early-stage trial is testing whether stem cells from a donor can help control heart failure in people whose hearts were weakened by a type of chemotherapy called anthracyclines. About 72 participants will either receive standard care alone or standard care plus stem cells given through a vein or directly into the heart. The main goal is to check for side effects and see if the stem cells improve heart function.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
donor bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a new treatment for heart failure caused by chemotherapy, potentially improving heart function and quality of life.
What could go wrong
This is a very early phase 1 trial with only 72 participants, so it is not yet proven to work. There may be side effects from the stem cell infusions or injections.
