Knee surgery showdown: partial vs. total replacement for arthritis
NCT ID NCT01326156
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study compares two types of knee replacement surgery for people with arthritis limited to the kneecap area. One hundred patients will be randomly assigned to receive either a partial replacement (patellofemoral arthroplasty) or a full knee replacement. The goal is to see which surgery leads to better knee function, quality of life, and implant longevity over 10 years.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Knee replacement surgery (patellofemoral arthroplasty or total knee replacement)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that a smaller surgery (PFA) works as well as a full knee replacement for certain patients, leading to faster recovery and less bone removal.
What could go wrong
This is a relatively small trial (100 people) and results may not apply to everyone. Both surgeries carry standard risks like infection, blood clots, or implant failure over time.
