Knee replacement pain: can a simple injection match a nerve block?
NCT ID NCT07744503
First seen Aug 04, 2026 · Last updated Aug 06, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This trial asks whether a numbing injection directly into the knee works as well as a continuous nerve block for controlling pain after knee replacement surgery. Adults aged 18 to 90 with knee arthritis scheduled for a first knee replacement are randomly assigned to receive either the injection or the nerve block. Pain levels, knee movement, and satisfaction are measured over several days to see if the simpler injection method is a viable alternative.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Local infiltration analgesia (LIA) with local anesthetics versus continuous femoral and sciatic nerve block with ropivacaine
- What this could lead to
- If LIA works as well as a nerve block, it could offer a simpler, less invasive pain relief option after knee replacement surgery.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, single-center trial, and results may not apply to all patients. Also, LIA might not provide the same level of pain control as a nerve block for everyone.
