Could a common vitamin stop liver scarring? new trial aims to find out
NCT ID NCT06599918
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This phase 2 trial tests whether nicotinamide (a form of vitamin B3) can stop or reverse liver fibrosis in people with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and obesity. Thirty adults will take either nicotinamide or a placebo daily for one year. Researchers will measure liver stiffness using Fibroscan and check for changes in body fat, weight, and inflammation.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
nicotinamide (vitamin B3)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a simple vitamin-based treatment to slow or reverse liver scarring in fatty liver disease.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early pilot study with only 30 people. It may not show clear benefit, and results may not apply to everyone with liver fibrosis.
