Could a diabetes drug ease pressure in the brain?
NCT ID NCT06027567
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This completed phase 4 trial tested whether a rapid weight loss program using semaglutide (Ozempic/Wegovy) plus a very low calorie diet can help people with idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH), a condition where high pressure in the skull causes headaches and vision problems. 38 participants with new-onset IIH and a BMI of 27 or higher were randomly assigned to either standard diet counselling or the intensive program. The study measured weight change and intracranial pressure to see if the approach could reduce symptoms.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Semaglutide (also known as Ozempic, Wegovy) combined with a very low calorie diet and dietician counselling
What this could lead to
If successful, this could offer a new weight-loss-based treatment to reduce intracranial pressure and improve symptoms in people with idiopathic intracranial hypertension.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed phase 4 trial with only 38 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The very low calorie diet is intense and may be hard to follow, and semaglutide can cause side effects like nausea and vomiting.
