Family doctors train to spot heart problems with ultrasound

NCT ID NCT07339007

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looks at whether a special training program can help family doctors use focused heart ultrasound (FoCUS) to accurately detect common heart conditions like heart failure and valve disease. About 500 patients will get both a family doctor's FoCUS and a cardiologist's full echo to compare results. The goal is to see if trained family doctors can reliably identify heart issues, which could improve early diagnosis in primary care.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that family doctors can reliably perform heart ultrasounds, potentially speeding up diagnosis of common heart conditions in primary care.

What could go wrong

This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. Results depend on doctors' learning and may not apply to all settings. It won't directly improve patient health.
