New approach aims to boost diabetes prevention in underserved communities
NCT ID NCT04022499
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study tested whether adding a special 'pre-session'—which includes education about diabetes risks, motivational interviewing, and help solving barriers—could encourage more people to attend a national diabetes prevention program. The trial involved 483 adults at risk for diabetes, mostly from low-income and minority backgrounds. The goal was to see if this extra support leads to better attendance and weight loss, which could help prevent type 2 diabetes.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
behavioral intervention (pre-session education and motivational interviewing)
What this could lead to
If successful, this approach could improve participation in diabetes prevention programs, helping more people at risk avoid type 2 diabetes.
What could go wrong
This is a completed trial testing a behavioral change, not a drug or device. Results may not apply to all populations or settings, and weight loss outcomes can vary.
