Emotion-Focused therapy tested to prevent diabetes in teens
NCT ID NCT05338944
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), a type of talk therapy that teaches mindfulness and emotional skills, can help teens with obesity improve their quality of life and manage weight. About 90 teens aged 14-17 who show signs of depression and are at risk for type 2 diabetes will be randomly assigned to DBT plus lifestyle coaching, lifestyle coaching alone, or a control group. The main goal is to see if teens will join and stick with the program.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) combined with lifestyle coaching
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a new way to help teens manage weight and reduce their risk of type 2 diabetes.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial focused on feasibility, not on proving the therapy works. Results may not apply to all teens.
