Freezing and zapping: new combo therapy aims to ease bone cancer pain
NCT ID NCT04693377
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether adding cryoablation (a procedure that freezes and kills cancer cells) to standard radiation therapy provides better pain relief for people whose cancer has spread to their bones. About 40 participants with various cancers will be split into two groups: one receiving radiation alone, the other receiving both cryoablation and radiation. The goal is to see if the combination reduces pain more effectively and improves quality of life.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
cryoablation (freezing) plus stereotactic body radiation therapy
What this could lead to
If it works, this combination could offer better pain relief for people with cancer that has spread to their bones, potentially reducing the need for strong painkillers.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 40 participants. It is not yet proven that adding cryoablation is better than radiation alone, and there may be risks from the procedure itself.
