New digital tool spots hidden Alzheimer's risk in routine doctor visits
NCT ID NCT07016178
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether a digital tool that scans electronic health records could help find older adults (65+) who might have undetected mild cognitive impairment or Alzheimer's disease. Over 3,400 patients from primary care clinics were identified as high-risk by the tool. Researchers then sent messages to these patients to encourage them to complete a cognitive assessment and consider joining research studies. The goal was to see if this approach is acceptable and feasible for early detection and engagement in care.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Passive Digital Marker (PDM) using electronic health record data
What this could lead to
If successful, this approach could help doctors identify people with early memory problems sooner and connect them to appropriate care and research studies.
What could go wrong
This is a completed feasibility study, not a treatment trial. The digital tool may not work as well in all populations or clinics, and it does not test any new drug or therapy.
