AI listens for dementia: new speech test could speed up diagnosis
NCT ID NCT07200739
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This observational study will enroll 440 Danish-speaking adults over 50 to see if an artificial intelligence model can detect dementia and mild cognitive impairment from speech recordings. Participants will complete standard cognitive tests and describe a picture while being recorded. The AI will analyze speech patterns to distinguish between those who need specialist memory care and those who don't. If successful, this tool could help doctors make faster, more accurate referrals.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could lead to a simple, non-invasive speech test that helps doctors quickly identify patients needing dementia specialist evaluation.
- What could go wrong
- This is an early observational study, not a treatment trial. The AI model may not be accurate enough in real-world settings, and results may not apply to non-Danish speakers.
