Blood cancer patients may get transfusions at home in hospice trial

NCT ID NCT06487247

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study tests a new program that gives blood cancer patients access to blood transfusions at home while they receive hospice care. The goal is to see if this improves their quality of life, mood, and reduces hospital visits near the end of life. The trial will include 700 adults with relapsed or refractory blood cancers who are receiving care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

HEME-Hospice program (home blood transfusions combined with hospice care)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer blood cancer patients a way to receive comforting transfusions at home while in hospice, potentially improving their quality of life and mood at the end of life.

What could go wrong

This is a behavioral intervention study, not a drug trial, so it won't cure the cancer. The benefit may be modest, and results may not apply to all hospice settings or patient groups.
