Could a diabetes drug restore ovulation in PCOS? new trial begins
NCT ID NCT07326111
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether tirzepatide, a drug already used for diabetes and weight loss, can improve irregular periods and ovulation in women with PCOS who are overweight or have obesity. About 198 women will receive either tirzepatide or a placebo for 72 weeks, along with lifestyle advice. The goal is to see if the drug helps restore normal menstrual cycles and ovulation.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
tirzepatide
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a new treatment option for PCOS-related ovarian dysfunction in women with overweight or obesity.
What could go wrong
This is a phase 4 trial, but it's still early for this specific use. The drug may not improve ovarian function, and side effects like nausea or vomiting are possible.
