Can Weight-Loss surgery alter how medications work?

NCT ID NCT07748273

First seen Aug 05, 2026 · Last updated Aug 06, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looks at how two common medications, rosuvastatin (a cholesterol drug) and losartan (a blood pressure drug), are absorbed in people who have had weight-loss surgery. Sixty adults scheduled for either Roux-en-Y gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy will take a single dose of each drug before and about 12 weeks after surgery. Researchers will measure drug levels in the blood to see if surgery changes how much of the drug gets into the body, and they will also examine stool samples to explore whether gut bacteria play a role.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Rosuvastatin and losartan, given as single oral doses before and after bariatric surgery
What this could lead to
If successful, this could help doctors adjust medication doses for people after weight-loss surgery, improving treatment safety and effectiveness.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study with only 60 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. It measures drug levels, not health outcomes, and the findings may not lead to immediate clinical changes.
