Will shedding pounds heal the pancreas? MRI scans seek answers

NCT ID NCT04746703

First seen Aug 12, 2026 · Last updated Aug 14, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study uses advanced MRI scans to see if bariatric surgery (weight-loss surgery) can improve the health of the pancreas in people with severe obesity. Researchers will scan the pancreas before surgery and again six months after, measuring fat content, tissue stiffness, and other markers. The goal is to understand how rapid weight loss affects pancreatic lesions and overall pancreatic health.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that bariatric surgery improves pancreatic health, potentially guiding better monitoring and treatment for obesity-related pancreatic issues.
What could go wrong
This is a small exploratory study, so results may not be conclusive. MRI measures are indirect markers, and changes may not reflect true clinical improvement.
