Can a cheaper anesthesia combo speed up waking after bariatric surgery?
NCT ID NCT07748247
First seen Aug 05, 2026 · Last updated Aug 06, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial tests whether switching from one inhaled anesthetic (sevoflurane) to another (desflurane) near the end of weight-loss surgery helps patients wake up just as quickly as using desflurane throughout. Adults with obesity scheduled for laparoscopic gastric bypass will be randomly assigned to one of the two anesthesia plans. The main goal is to see if the swap is no worse than continuous desflurane in terms of time to breathing tube removal, with additional checks on nausea, recovery scores, and costs.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Desflurane and a sevoflurane-to-desflurane swap, both inhaled anesthetics used during surgery
- What this could lead to
- If the swap works as well as continuous desflurane, it could offer a cheaper, equally safe way to wake up faster after weight-loss surgery.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, single-center trial, and the swap might not prove non-inferior in all patients. Anesthetics carry risks like nausea or breathing issues.
