Intermittent fasting may cut cancer risk in obesity

NCT ID NCT05114798

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study compares time-restricted eating (eating only between 12pm-8pm) to daily calorie restriction for weight loss and colorectal cancer risk reduction in 193 obese adults aged 45-70. Participants follow their assigned diet for 6 months, then a maintenance phase for another 6 months. Researchers will measure weight, body fat, and blood markers linked to cancer risk.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

time-restricted eating (intermittent fasting)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a simple, effective lifestyle strategy to reduce obesity and potentially lower colorectal cancer risk.

What could go wrong

This is a mid-stage behavioral study with 193 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Adherence to the eating schedule can be challenging, and weight loss may not directly translate to cancer prevention.
