Could a common blood thinner replace warfarin for LVAD patients?

NCT ID NCT07471139

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study compares two blood thinners—apixaban (Eliquis) and warfarin (Coumadin)—in 460 people with advanced heart failure who have a HeartMate 3 heart pump. The goal is to see which drug better prevents strokes, pump clots, and serious bleeding. Participants must have had their pump for at least 3 months and be currently on warfarin.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Apixaban (Eliquis) compared to warfarin (Coumadin)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could offer a simpler, more effective blood thinner for LVAD patients, reducing strokes and bleeding complications.

What could go wrong

This is a phase 3 trial, but it has not yet started recruiting. Apixaban may not prove superior or could have unexpected side effects in this specific device population.
