Summary
This study tests whether a combination of chemotherapy and radiation before surgery (total neoadjuvant therapy) can help about half of rectal cancer patients achieve a complete response, allowing them to avoid surgery and preserve their rectum through a watch-and-wait strategy. The trial involves 400 participants with early-stage rectal cancer and compares outcomes like quality of life, complications, and survival between those who get the new therapy and those who have surgery first. The goal is to see if this approach can become a new standard of care.
