Tailored blood thinners could save limbs in PAD patients

NCT ID NCT07613840

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether a personalized blood-thinning plan, guided by a blood test, can prevent dangerous blood clots better than the standard one-size-fits-all approach in people with peripheral artery disease who have had leg surgery. About 484 adults will be randomly assigned to either the personalized plan or standard treatment. Their medications will be adjusted based on blood test results over a year to see if the tailored approach reduces clots, amputations, and repeat procedures.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Aspirin and Clopidogrel (blood thinners)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could lead to a more effective, personalized way to prevent blood clots and reduce amputations in people with peripheral artery disease after surgery.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage trial with 484 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The personalized plan may not reduce clots or could increase bleeding risks compared to standard care.
