First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This pilot study at Johns Hopkins University will enroll 40 Black women who recently had gestational diabetes and are overweight. Half will receive prepared low-carb, low-fat meals plus nutrition counseling, lactation support, and culturally tailored food bundles; the other half gets standard prepared meals only. The study will measure whether the enhanced program is feasible, acceptable, and helps with weight control and diet quality over six months.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Medically tailored meals (low-carb, low-fat) plus nutrition counseling, lactation support, and culturally adapted food bundles
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a practical, community-based way to help Black women with a history of gestational diabetes lose weight after childbirth and lower their risk of type 2 diabetes.
What could go wrong
This is a very small pilot study (40 participants) testing feasibility, not effectiveness. Results may not apply to other groups or settings, and the intervention requires significant effort from participants.
