Can a tailored trial help heart patients decide on Beta-Blockers?
NCT ID NCT05585125
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether a personalized 'N-of-1' trial can help older adults with a type of heart failure (HFpEF) decide if they want to continue or stop taking beta-blockers. Twenty participants will go through periods on and off their beta-blocker, in a random order, to see how it affects their confidence and decision-making. The goal is to find a practical way to optimize medications for each individual.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
beta blocker (acebutolol, atenolol, betaxolol, bisoprolol, carvedilol, labetalol, metoprolol)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that personalized N-of-1 trials help patients and doctors make better decisions about continuing or stopping beta-blockers.
What could go wrong
This is a very small, early-phase study with only 20 participants, focused on decision-making rather than health outcomes. Results may not apply to everyone with heart failure.
