Could high uric acid warn of liver damage in obesity?

NCT ID NCT07168551

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study will examine the connection between high uric acid levels (hyperuricemia) and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in 111 obese adults. Researchers will use blood tests, ultrasound, and FibroScan to measure uric acid, liver fat, and liver scarring. The goal is to see if high uric acid can help spot liver problems early, potentially leading to better prevention strategies.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If the link is confirmed, it could point to using uric acid levels as an early warning sign for liver damage in obese adults.

What could go wrong

This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. It will not test any therapy, so it cannot prove that lowering uric acid prevents liver disease.
