New hybrid heart procedure aims to tame stubborn AFib in heart failure patients

NCT ID NCT05411614

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether a newer, two-step hybrid ablation procedure works better than standard catheter ablation for people with persistent atrial fibrillation (a type of irregular heartbeat) and heart failure. About 120 participants will be randomly assigned to one of the two procedures. The main goal is to see which method better prevents the return of atrial arrhythmias without the need for long-term medication.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Convergent hybrid ablation (epicardial and endocardial ablation) versus standard catheter ablation

What this could lead to

If successful, this hybrid approach could offer better control of atrial fibrillation in patients with heart failure, potentially improving heart function and quality of life.

What could go wrong

This is a relatively small, early-stage trial (120 participants) comparing two invasive procedures. The hybrid ablation is more complex and may carry higher risks, and it is not yet proven to be superior.
