Scientists track heart changes after attack to predict failure risk

NCT ID NCT02047396

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study follows 1,599 people who had a first heart attack to see how their hearts remodel over time. Researchers want to link these changes to later heart failure. Participants are from several Minnesota counties and will be monitored for heart failure and death. No new drug or treatment is being tested.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this study could help doctors predict who will develop heart failure after a heart attack, leading to better monitoring or early treatment.

What could go wrong

This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. It may not directly improve patient outcomes, and results may not apply to people outside the specific communities studied.
