Sugar-Tweaked heart hormone tested in healthy volunteers

NCT ID NCT07606183

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This early-phase study in 17 healthy male volunteers examines how a natural sugar modification on the heart hormone ANP changes its effects on blood pressure and fluid balance. Participants receive intravenous infusions of both the sugar-modified and unmodified forms of the hormone, plus a saline placebo, on separate days. The goal is to understand whether the sugar attachment alters how the hormone works, which could inform future treatments for conditions like heart failure and high blood pressure.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

glycosylated atrial natriuretic peptide (gANP) and non-glycosylated ANP

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help researchers understand how a natural sugar modification changes the heart hormone's effects, potentially pointing toward new treatments for high blood pressure or heart failure.

What could go wrong

This is a very early, small study in only 17 healthy young men, not patients. The results may not apply to older or sicker people, and the hormone is given by IV, not as a pill.
