New study aims to improve breathing tube decisions for tiniest preemies

NCT ID NCT06808997

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study observes how doctors decide when to remove breathing tubes (extubation) in extremely preterm infants born before 28 weeks. Researchers will track 100 babies in the NICU, asking doctors daily why they choose to extubate or not. The goal is to understand current practices and improve future care for these fragile newborns.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this study could help doctors make better decisions about removing breathing tubes in preterm infants, potentially reducing lung damage and improving survival.

What could go wrong

This is an observational study, not a treatment trial, so it won't directly change care. Results may not apply to all hospitals or infants.
