New brain scan technique may predict memory loss after epilepsy surgery
NCT ID NCT03094312
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looks at whether a special brain imaging method called dynamic spectral imaging (ISD) can predict if someone will have memory or thinking problems after epilepsy surgery. Researchers will map brain activity during cognitive tasks in 50 adults with epilepsy who are already scheduled for brain surgery. The goal is to see if certain brain signals can help surgeons avoid removing areas important for thinking.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Dynamic Spectral Imaging (ISD) - a brain mapping procedure
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could help doctors better predict and avoid cognitive problems after epilepsy surgery, making surgery safer for patients.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage study (50 participants) that is only looking for patterns, not testing a treatment. The results may not apply to all epilepsy patients or lead to immediate changes in care.
