New lung imaging could help tiny preemies breathe easier
NCT ID NCT06609135
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tested whether a non-invasive imaging method called electrical impedance tomography (EIT) can predict when very preterm infants (born at 25-29 weeks) are ready to stop breathing support. Researchers placed EIT belts on 20 infants in the NICU to measure lung function. The goal was to see if EIT readings at 31 weeks could predict successful weaning from ventilation by 32-33 weeks. If it works, EIT might help create better, more personalized breathing support guidelines for these fragile babies.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to better guidelines for when to wean preterm infants off breathing support, potentially reducing lung damage.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed observational study (20 infants) that only looks for associations. It does not test a treatment, so it may not change practice on its own.
