Could ditching Beta-Blockers boost quality of life for seniors with heart failure?
NCT ID NCT07298993
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looks at whether gradually stopping beta-blockers (medicines often used for heart failure) can improve symptoms and daily function in adults aged 60 and older with a specific type of heart failure called HFpEF. About 240 participants will either taper off their beta-blocker or continue it, and researchers will track hospitalizations, quality of life, and mood over 4 months. The goal is to see if removing these medications, when they may no longer be needed, leads to better outcomes.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
beta-blockers (atenolol, bisoprolol, carvedilol, metoprolol succinate, metoprolol tartrate)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that stopping unnecessary beta-blockers helps older adults with HFpEF feel better and have fewer hospitalizations.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase study (240 participants) focused on symptom improvement, not a cure. Results may not apply to all patients, and stopping beta-blockers could carry risks like increased heart rate or blood pressure.
