Could a common circulation drug stop strokes before they strike again?
NCT ID NCT07174414
First seen Jun 26, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether adding cilostazol, a drug that improves blood flow, to standard aspirin or clopidogrel therapy can prevent another stroke or heart attack in people who have recently had a stroke or mini-stroke. About 2,000 participants will take either cilostazol or a placebo twice daily for several years. The goal is to see if the combination reduces major cardiovascular events like stroke, heart attack, or vascular death.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Cilostazol
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could provide a new, affordable way to reduce the risk of another stroke or heart attack in people who have already had one.
- What could go wrong
- This is a large phase 3 trial, but cilostazol may not reduce events more than placebo, and it carries risks like bleeding or heart-related side effects.
