New study tests aggressive BP management to protect heart and kidneys in cancer patients

NCT ID NCT04467021

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated Jun 22, 2026 · Updated 32 times

Summary

This phase II trial tests whether intensive blood pressure management (targeting systolic BP below 120 mmHg) is better than standard care (below 140 mmHg) for patients with advanced kidney or thyroid cancer starting anti-angiogenic TKI therapy. The study enrolls 61 participants and measures blood pressure differences over 6 months. The goal is to find the safest way to manage BP during cancer treatment to reduce cardiovascular and kidney risks.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

intensive blood pressure management (target systolic BP <120 mmHg)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that aggressive blood pressure control reduces heart and kidney complications in cancer patients on certain therapies.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase study (61 participants) focused on feasibility, not hard outcomes. Results may not apply broadly, and intensive BP lowering carries risks like dizziness or fainting.

Conditions

The condition(s) this trial relates to.

Carcinoma, Medullary cardiovascular disorder chronic kidney disease chronic renal failure syndrome medullary thyroid gland carcinoma renal cell adenocarcinoma renal cell carcinoma

As listed by the trial registrant

The condition terms exactly as the trial's registrant entered them.
