Breathe your way to lower blood pressure? new study tests quick exercise for postmenopausal women

NCT ID NCT05000515

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study compares a 5-minute daily breathing exercise (IMST) to brisk walking for lowering blood pressure in postmenopausal women aged 50 and older with above-normal blood pressure. Researchers will measure changes in blood pressure and blood vessel function after 3 months of training. The goal is to see if this quick, time-efficient exercise can be as effective as standard aerobic exercise.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Inspiratory muscle strength training (IMST) and aerobic exercise (brisk walking)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could offer a quick, convenient alternative to aerobic exercise for lowering blood pressure in postmenopausal women.

What could go wrong

This is a Phase 2-sized trial with 90 participants, so results may not apply to all women. The breathing exercise may not lower blood pressure as much as hoped, and long-term effects are unknown.
