Dialysis heart risk: which beta blocker wins?
NCT ID NCT05931276
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This phase 3 trial compares two common beta blockers—metoprolol and carvedilol—in about 2,540 hemodialysis patients. The goal is to see if metoprolol, which is removed by dialysis, leads to fewer major heart events like heart attacks, strokes, or heart failure hospitalizations. Participants are already on one of these drugs and will be randomly assigned to continue with metoprolol or switch to carvedilol.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
metoprolol succinate and carvedilol
What this could lead to
If metoprolol works better, it could reduce heart attacks, strokes, and deaths in dialysis patients.
What could go wrong
This is a large trial but still uncertain; results may not apply to all patients, and both drugs have known side effects like low blood pressure or fatigue.
