Cardiogenic shock
MONDO:0800175A rare, cardiac condition characterized by severely decreased cardiac output, hypoperfusion and end-organ dysfunction, in the presence of adequate intravascular volume. The clinical presentation is variable and may range from subtle hemodynamic alterations to overt cardiovascular collapse. Commonly reported features include dyspnea, crackles, elevated jugular venous pressure, altered mental state, abnormal pulse pressure, oliguria, cold extremities, and increased serum lactate levels.

Could a simple filter tame the deadly inflammation of heart shock?
Disease control CompletedThis study tests whether adding an Oxiris membrane—a special blood filter that removes toxins and inflammatory molecules—to the ECMO circuit can reduce the harmful inflammation and organ damage that often occurs when blood flow is restored after cardiogenic shock. The trial enrol…

Could cheap steroids help hearts in shock?
Disease control CompletedThis study tested whether giving low doses of two steroids (hydrocortisone and fludrocortisone) helps adults with cardiogenic shock, a life-threatening condition where the heart can't pump enough blood. 380 participants received either the steroids or a placebo. The main goal was…

New blood filter could ease heart drug dependence in shock patients
Disease control CompletedThis study tested whether adding a special blood filter called CytoSorb to standard ECMO support helps people with cardiogenic shock (a severe form of heart failure). The filter aims to remove inflammatory substances from the blood. Researchers measured how much heart-support med…

Can a simple dressing save lives? new trial targets ECMO infections
Disease control CompletedThis study tested whether using a special antiseptic dressing on ECMO tubes can reduce serious infections in critically ill patients. About 270 adults on ECMO for heart or lung failure were randomly assigned to get either the special dressing or a standard one. The goal was to se…

Could a dialysis filter help heart attack survivors?
Disease control CompletedThis study tested whether a special type of dialysis (high-permeability hemodialysis) could help people in shock after being revived from cardiac arrest. The idea was to filter out inflammatory substances from the blood to improve blood pressure and reduce the need for strong med…

New ultrasound test may predict dangerous blood pressure drop during C-Sections
Diagnosis CompletedThis study looked at whether a simple ultrasound of the jugular vein and certain shock indices can predict low blood pressure after spinal anesthesia in C-sections. Researchers measured the jugular vein collapsibility index and several shock indices in 60 pregnant women. The goal…

Can a tiny heart pump Fine-Tune support for failing hearts?
Knowledge-focused CompletedThis study looks at how the Impella CP, a small mechanical heart pump, changes blood flow and heart function in people with cardiogenic shock—a life-threatening condition where the heart can't pump enough blood. Researchers will measure pressures inside the heart and use ultrasou…

Could a simple score decide when to start ECMO and save more lives?
Knowledge-focused CompletedThis study looks at whether a score based on heart-support medications (the vasoactive-inotropic score, or VIS) can help doctors decide the best time to start ECMO in patients who develop severe heart failure after cardiac surgery. Researchers will review medical records from nea…

ER study reveals critical care admission patterns in 1,629 patients
Knowledge-focused CompletedThis study observed over 1,600 adults in French emergency rooms to understand how patients are managed in the resuscitation area and whether being admitted directly to that area versus later affects their need for intensive care within 24 hours. Researchers recorded patient detai…

Heart MRI may reveal hidden damage in young cancer survivors after sepsis
Knowledge-focused CompletedThis pilot study tested whether a heart MRI could be done safely and effectively in children with cancer who recently had sepsis. The goal was to see if the MRI could find hidden heart inflammation or weakness that standard tests might miss. Only 7 children took part, and the foc…
