Ultrasound may make blood draws safer and faster for shock patients

NCT ID NCT07362628

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tested whether using ultrasound to guide a needle into the wrist artery works better than the usual method of feeling for the pulse in emergency patients with shock. One hundred adults were randomly assigned to either ultrasound guidance or the traditional palpation technique. The researchers measured how often the first attempt succeeded, how many tries were needed, and the time to get a blood sample.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If ultrasound proves better, it could become the standard method for arterial blood draws in shock patients, making the procedure faster and more successful.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed study (100 patients) comparing two techniques. Results may not apply to all settings or patient groups, and ultrasound requires extra equipment and training.
