Could a simple dressing cut deadly infections in ECMO patients?

NCT ID NCT05750576

First seen Jan 11, 2026 · Last updated Apr 28, 2026 · Updated 15 times

Summary

This study tested whether using a special antiseptic dressing (containing chlorhexidine) on the tubes that connect patients to ECMO life support can reduce serious infections. Researchers compared this to standard dressings in 270 critically ill adults with heart or lung failure. The goal was to see if the special dressing lowers the number of tube-related infections, which are a major risk for these patients.
