Sweetener tested to fight dangerous gut bug in IBD patients

NCT ID NCT05852587

Summary

This study is testing if a common sweetener called xylitol, taken as a daily capsule, can safely remove C. difficile bacteria from the gut of people with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The goal is to prevent these patients from developing a serious C. difficile infection. About 99 participants will take either xylitol at one of two doses or a placebo for four weeks, and researchers will monitor them for a full year to see if the bacteria is cleared and if infections are prevented.
