Weight loss programme may ease heart symptoms in seniors with AF

NCT ID NCT03713775

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tested whether a commercial meal replacement weight loss programme could reduce atrial fibrillation (AF) symptoms in overweight adults aged 60-85 with persistent AF. 119 participants were randomly assigned to either the weight loss programme or usual care for 32-36 weeks. The main goal was to see if symptoms improved, measured by a standard AF symptom questionnaire.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

meal replacement weight loss programme

What this could lead to

If successful, this weight loss programme could offer a simple, non-drug way to ease AF symptoms in older adults.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial (119 participants) with no blinding. Results may not apply to all AF patients, and weight loss can be hard to maintain long-term.
