Back surgery may change how you walk – new study investigates
NCT ID NCT05231265
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study looks at how lumbar surgery changes the way people with chronic low back pain walk. Researchers will measure walking complexity (how adaptable your stride is) before and 3 to 6 months after surgery in 32 patients. The goal is to see if pain relief from surgery outweighs any stiffness caused by the procedure, leading to better walking adaptability.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
lumbar surgery (arthrodesis or prosthesis)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a new way to objectively measure how well patients recover walking ability after back surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early proof-of-concept study with only 32 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The surgery itself carries risks like infection or nerve damage.
